RULES FOR CHALLENGES: (OPEN OR WITHIN TEAM)
1. All Challengers and Challengees are expected to fully accomodate each other with regard to scheduling matches and on court play. All behaviors should represent complete sportsmanship in compliance with the "Code of Tennis".
2. Winners of the challenge take the line with all other lines moving down. Each line may issue unlimited challenges. However, if Challengers lose two challenges to the same line they may not issue any new challenges to that line during that challenge season.
3. Only players who played lines 1 and 2 and won a majority of their matches at these lines challenge to the level above them.
4. A "new line" may challenge onto any existing team during the Open Challenge Season.
5. If you are moving up a division, you may challenge any line.
6. Challengers responsibilities:
a. Contact the challengees to request 6 dates and times for the match. If they do not respond, contact the Captain. No subs will be allowed to play the challenge matches.
b. Reply to challengees within 24 hours by selecting one of their dates/times offered to play the match.
c. Make the court reservations and provide the tennis balls.
d. Once the challenge date is set, no substitutions are allowed.
7. Challengees responsibilities:
a. Give the six dates and times to play within 24 hours after being contacted by the challengers.
b. The date/time choices must include at least two different days and two different times. If one of the players is employed, one of the date/time choices must be in the evening, weekend or day off.
c. Once the challenge date is set, no substitutions are allowed.
8. Challenge matches must be completed within 14 days after the challenge is issued. A rain out will extend the deadline another 7 days. If a line is unable to play for more than 7 consecutive days due to vacation, travel, injury, or illness etc. they must notify their captain. For special circumstances, the Women's Steering Committee, along with the Tennis Director will make the final judgment.
9. Both lines(challengers and challengees) are allowed a 24 hour "grace period" before they may challenge again.
10. When an existing line loses a partner, the remaining partner may select a new partner and remain at their same line. However, if the remaining partner does not have a new partner by the challenge roster deadline and is challenged, she has two weeks to find a new partner and complete the challenge. If not, she forfeits her place on the team.
11. If a partnership splits, each member should find a new partner, then play a series of 2 or 3 matches to determine who will retain the line.
12. Partners who drop out of the top 5 lines on a team are still considered on the team and can challenge their way back onto the starting line-up at any time. If you drop out of your captains playing rotation, you, of course, have the option during open challenge season to challenge onto another team.
13. The Tennis Director may make necessary adjustments in these rules for the overall benefit of Franco's NWTL teams.
PLEASE NOTE: After the fall 2010 season, rules for challenging a team above will be amended as follows: To challenge a team you must have played line 1 or 2 and won 70% of your matches with a minimum of 8 matches played at line 1 and 2.
